Painting is a truly fascinating experience. Some go as far as making it their career and passion in life. They cannot be blamed though, for who would not enjoy being in the company of colors and anything aesthetic? Learning how to paint, although seemingly like a complicated experience, is actually very easy. One does not need to enroll in an art class to develop the skill. Knowing what materials to have and the techniques to use, one is ready to start his journey as a painter.

For starters, equip yourself with the proper materials. These do not just include a brush and paint. There are different kinds of brushes and various types of paints or colors. Brushes are usually made of synthetic hair. But if you can afford one made of real hair, then that is even better. Just make sure to have different-sized brushes. The bigger ones are used for broader strokes while the smaller ones are for fine strokes.

Paints also vary in types. For starters, it is better to use watercolor or acrylic. These two come in affordable prices and are easy to use. Although oil gives a very good finish, it is more expensive and is hard to apply.

Although we are accustomed to drawing on plain bond paper back when we were in school, with painting, it becomes different. The best material to use is of course the canvas. As a beginner, you may choose to use a canvas panel instead of a stretched canvas. The latter is the one used by professional artists. Your canvas will depend on your medium or paint. If you chose watercolor, then use watercolor paper. For acrylic, you may use acrylic paper or the actual canvas.

First things first: learn the basics of color. It is best to know which are the primary and secondary colors to maximize their use. Knowing which colors will result from certain combinations will aid you when doing colorful paintings. Mastering how to use white to lighten a shade or black to darken a shade is crucial in giving out dimension effects.

You may ask, what should you paint? It depends on your preference and likes. You may start with basic shapes. Later on, you may venture on portraits, landscapes, or even abstract pieces.

The most important thing to remember is to have patience when learning how to paint. One does not become a professional painter overnight. It takes tremendous practice and time to achieve a real masterpiece.
